Podebrady is a picturesque town located in the fertile lowlands next to the Labe river, 50 km from Prague on highway E67. At an elevation of 185 m the climate is mild with low year round precipitation.
Podebardy was founded in 1224 near an important crossing on the Labe river. The castle dominates the town, where according to historians the Czech king George of Podebrady was born in 1420. His peace efforts far surpassed following centuries. As early as the 17th century a small spa was founded in Podebrady. The waters here were considered the most medicinal in the region with their high iron content. The most significant year in modern history for this town was the year 1905, when searching for drinking water a spring of mineral water with superior curative effects was discovered in the courtyard of the castle.
